What is the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

All three rely on the same crawlable foundation. They differ in the surface they target and in how success is measured.

What do we deliver as part of GEO?

GEO delivers an audit report, a fixed question set, a technical change list, an answer-focused page structure, entity cleanup and a periodic visibility report. Each deliverable sets up the next step.

  • GEO audit report

We review crawler access, content structure and the consistency of your brand information. Findings are reported in order of priority.

  • Question set

Questions people are likely to ask AI are listed by stage: service, comparison and purchase. All measurement relies on this fixed set.

  • Technical fixes

We check robots.txt rules, snippet settings and structured data. You receive a change list your team can act on.

  • Answer-focused page structure

Priority pages are restructured around answer-first paragraphs and question-based headings.

  • Entity and brand consistency

Your brand name, service descriptions and company details are aligned across your site and external profiles.

  • Visibility report

Brand mentions, citations, sentiment and competitor share are reported by platform, and priorities for the next period are set.

How does a GEO audit check technical access?

AI surfaces can only use content they can reach and display. So the audit first checks whether crawlers can get to the site and which text can be shown.

Indexing and snippets
According to Google's documentation on AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link.
Display restrictions
We read each use of nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, because these settings limit the text that can be used in answers.
Google-Extended
This token does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is covered in its own entry in Google's list of crawlers. Whether to allow it is a separate decision.
Other AI crawlers
The OpenAI crawler documentation and the Perplexity crawler documentation define their own user agents. robots.txt is reviewed separately for each of these agents.
Security layer
Hosting or firewall settings can block crawlers regardless of robots.txt. Server responses are checked crawler by crawler.

Where is brand information aligned?

AI answers pull brand information from many sources. When the company name, service description and contact details read the same way across those sources, inaccurate answers become less likely.

On-site information
About and contact pages plus Organization structured data, including sameAs links.
Business profiles
Your Google Business Profile and map listings, if you have them.
Social profiles
Profile descriptions, category and website fields.
Industry sources
Company descriptions in membership lists, industry directories and partner pages.
Outdated content
Old pages and press content describing services you no longer offer are updated, or a correction is requested.

Why is GEO work measured with the same question set?

Because AI answers vary, the question set stays fixed from the start through to reporting. That way, changes can be compared like for like.

  1. Defining questions and competitors

Target services, audience and the brands you are compared with are clarified, and the question set is locked.

  2. Baseline measurement and audit

The question set is tested across platforms, the site is audited and the current state is recorded.

  3. Prioritized implementation

Technical blockers are removed first, then content and entity changes follow.

  4. Measurement and updates

The same set is measured again and the plan is updated based on the new data.

Who is GEO for?

It fits brands whose buyers are influenced by AI answers when making a purchase decision.

  • Service and B2B brands whose customers consult AI before they buy
  • Sites that rank well organically but do not show up in AI Overviews answers
  • Companies that AI answers describe with missing or incorrect information
  • Brands that are left out of answers where their competitors are mentioned
  • Teams that want their existing SEO content to work on AI surfaces too

What to know before hiring a GEO agency

What is a GEO agency?

A GEO agency is a team that takes on brand visibility in AI answers as a service. GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, and the industry also calls it AI SEO.

What sets such an agency apart from a classic SEO team is not the foundation but the success metric. Alongside rankings and clicks, it tracks brand mentions, citations and the accuracy of information in answers. Google does not require anything separate for these surfaces, so the work is built on a solid search foundation.

The real contribution is setting up consistent measurement across platforms and tracing misreported brand information back to its source. Asking an agency how it repeats this measurement is the fastest way to evaluate its promise.

What is AEO, and how is it different from GEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. Its goal is to become the source on surfaces that give a single, direct answer to a question. Google's featured snippets and voice assistants that read the answer aloud fall into this group.

In GEO, the answer is compiled from multiple sources, so the goal is to be mentioned within that compilation. In practice, AEO means a page structure that puts the question in the heading and gives the answer in the first sentence.

You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. According to Google's featured snippets documentation, Google's systems make that choice. So AEO is not a guaranteed placement but work that makes the right answer easy to find. Digitruva runs AEO inside the GEO plan, using the same question set, rather than as a separate project.

What does GEO optimization involve?

GEO optimization covers four areas of work: access, content, entity and measurement. For access, it confirms that pages are crawlable, indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, because that is what Google looks for in a supporting link within its AI features in Search.

Meeting that requirement still does not guarantee being shown. For content, priority pages are broken into passages that make sense when read on their own, and details such as definitions, scope and dates are stated clearly.

For entity work, the external profiles that carry brand information are listed and anything that contradicts the site is corrected. For measurement, the same question set is rerun periodically. Topic gaps that the measurement reveals are closed by producing quotable content, and the effect is then read in the same set.

Do you need llms.txt or special structured data for GEO?

Not for visibility on Google. In its AI features documentation, Google states clearly that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Structured data has a different job. Organization markup helps search engines understand details about an organization, and the sameAs property links official profiles. What really needs checking is access. robots.txt controls crawling, nosnippet and max-snippet limit the text that can be shown, and Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search.

Digitruva reads each of these settings during the audit, because one wrong block can undermine all the content work. These checks are also part of the technical SEO foundation and serve both efforts.

How do voice and multimodal search affect GEO work?

Voice search optimization assumes the answer will be heard rather than scanned on a screen. That is why passages that answer the question in a short sentence, one that is still clear when read aloud, stand out. In multimodal search, users can send an image along with text.

Taking a photo and asking about a product is a familiar example. Here, image descriptions, product information and page copy need to be consistent. If the model shown in the image differs from the model in the text, matching the answer correctly gets harder.

Search Console's generative AI report can filter text-based and multimodal searches separately, so the difference can be tracked. These surfaces are not separate jobs but outcomes of the same content structure.

What promises should you watch out for when choosing a GEO agency?

Be cautious of proposals that guarantee citations or promise a definite spot on a particular platform. AI answers can vary by person and time even for the same question, and a single screenshot is not proof.

A promise of secret Google-specific markup also contradicts official documentation. The proposal should state which question set will be measured, on which platforms and with how many repetitions. Work done without recording a baseline cannot be evaluated later.

It should also be clear who keeps which work and who owns the access. That is why Digitruva starts with an analysis that measures your visibility, which records the question set, and states the limits of the measurement in the report.
